How much does a new water meter cost?

Below is a break down of our Service Line & Meter Installation Charges

What is the difference between an Automated Meter Reader (AMR) and a manual read meter?

An AMR meter transmits the customer’s monthly water usage through the use of hands-free communication technology. The read is then stored in a handheld device until downloaded into the computer system for billing. This method is very accurate and efficient and eliminates the need to estimate during the winter months.

A manual read meter is one that the meter reader has to read manually and input the read into the handheld device. Ponderosa Utility Corporation is in the process of replacing and upgrading all of the existing manual read meters to AMR meters. Newly updated meters will speed up the meter reading process, allowing our water operators to focus their attention on the maintenance of the distribution system.

Why can’t I fence in the meter? It’s on my property.

Ponderosa Utility Corporation requires unobstructed access to all meters at all times. This is an Arizona Corporation Commission regulation, as well as a P.U.C policy. Even though the water meter does provide water service to your location, it is the sole property of the utility company.

Why can’t I use the shut-off valve at the meter? I have the correct tool.

The lid, meter boxes, and the meter are the sole property of Ponderosa Utility Corporation and are NOT to be accessed or operated by anyone other than a P.U.C. employee. Even with the correct tool, the valve on the meter could suffer damage if not operated correctly or turned too much.

If any damage occurs to the water meter, the homeowner is liable for all costs to repair the damage.

(reference the Policy page for more information regarding this important policy.)

Do you treat the water with any chemicals?

Ponderosa Utility Corporation does not add any chemicals to the water for treatment. Per ADEQ guidelines, we are NOT required to fluoridate or chlorinate our water to disinfect it due to its natural purity, so we do not.

However, if there is a potential for bacterial contamination to occur, such as the installation of a new main line, a main line repair, or a positive total coliform test result, P.U.C. would use chlorine to decontaminate the system to eliminate any potentially harmful bacteria that could be present.

Why is my water pressure low?

Ponderosa Utility Corporation is required by the Arizona Corporation Commission to maintain a minimum pressure of 20 psi at the customer’s meter. The pressure around the neighborhood is substantially higher than this minimum requirement.

If you are having water pressure issues, please contact the utility office.

What is the white build-up around my fixtures?

The water that Ponderosa Utility Corporation pumps out of the ground is considered to be hard water based on the test results. This is the result of natural filtration through hundreds of feet of limestone.  The white build-up you see around faucet heads and inside the toilet bowl is Calcium Carbonate and Manganese. These elements are healthy and necessary for proper bodily function. Although the build-up may be a nuisance, it will not harm you.
